[01]Why it's built

An open protocol deserves an open door.

bespoke's chat rooms are standard XMPP multi-user chats. Not "XMPP-inspired", not a proprietary lookalike: the real standard that has routed messages since 1999.

1999 today standard XMPP the whole way

That was a design choice, and it cuts both ways. We get battle-tested routing, native push, and a mature ecosystem for free. You get something rarer from a chat product: an exit and an entrance. Any standard client can talk to your rooms, which means your inbox doesn't have to live in a browser tab unless you want it to.

Locking the front door to our web app would waste the openness the whole stack is built on. "No walled gardens" is easy to say; a connect page that hands you credentials for the client of your choice is what it costs.

From your dashboard, the connect page generates the account credentials a standard client needs. They're created on demand, and you can rotate them whenever you like.

Point your client at bespoke

Dino on the desktop, Conversations on Android, Gajim if that's been your home since the 2000s. Any client that speaks XMPP joins the same rooms your web inbox uses.

History follows you

Your rooms carry their full history through the standard archive, so a new client starts where the web chat left off. Use both; they're the same inbox.

Which clients work?+
Any client that speaks standard XMPP with multi-user chat. In practice: Dino (GNOME desktop), Conversations (Android), and Gajim (cross-platform desktop) are the well-tested paths.
Do I lose the web chat if I connect a client?+
No. Both connect to the same rooms, and history syncs between them. Use the web chat on a borrowed laptop and your client everywhere else; it's one inbox.
Is my history really all there?+
Yes. Rooms carry their full history through the standard archive (MAM), so a fresh client fills in everything the web chat would show you.
Why is this a Pro feature?+
Dedicated clients need real accounts on our server: credentials we mint, rotate, and support. That's infrastructure, and it's what Pro pays for. The free web chat speaks the same open protocol underneath, so you're never locked into our app.
