Reply to a specific message
- new You can now reply to any specific message in a conversation, on every surface: your inbox, the embed, the full-page chats, and group chats. The message you're replying to appears as a compact quote above your reply, and tapping a quote jumps back to the original.
- new On a phone, press-and-hold any message to reply or react with an emoji (reactions previously needed a desktop hover). On desktop, hover a message and hit the new ↩ button.
- new Replies survive reloads and work on messages from earlier sessions. Apps like Dino and Conversations see them as native quoted replies.
Conversations move fast, and "yes, the second one" only makes sense if you can see the question. Replies pin your answer to the exact message it answers, so nothing dangles.
When you reply, your message carries the original above it: who said it, and the first line of what they said. Tap the band and the conversation scrolls back to the message itself, wherever it is. Everything below is exactly what shipped, not an artist's impression.
On a phone, press and hold any message to reply or react. Reactions used to be hidden behind a hover that only exists on desktop, so this menu brings them to touch screens for the first time. On desktop, hover a message and click the new reply arrow next to the emoji.
While you type, a quiet bar above the box shows what you are replying to. The x drops the reply and goes back to a normal message.
Replies work on every surface: your inbox, the chat embedded on your site, the full page behind each link, and group chats. They keep working after a reload, including on messages from days earlier, and people writing to you from apps like Dino or Conversations see proper quoted replies, because replies speak the same standard (XEP-0447) those apps already use.
